“Wow!” was the first word uttered to me by the doctor regarding my blood test results…

Going into my appointment that day, I felt confident I had either equaled or bettered my wife’s recent blood results. The doctor had been amazed at Camille’s low cholesterol levels, great blood pressure and other stats. The doc even mentioned to Camille that she must be eating extremely healthy and keeping up on a good exercise routine, just based on the results. And that she had the blood pressure of a competitive swimmer. You gotta love CrossFit! Follow Glassman’s simple nutrition and variable exercise routine, and not only do you feel and look great, but your insides also function like a well oiled machine. My wife and I both did CrossFit, but I had been doing it, minus the nutrition piece. Until recently, I figured that because I was still young at 36, and work out like a dog, that i deserved to treat myself to a life of good tasting food everyday. I was relatively lean, my WODs were fairly strong, and I felt good…so I could have chips with my sandwich, and ice cream at night after dinner. Also, if I needed a snack in the afternoon, whole grain goldfish aren’t so bad. Lastly, unlike Camille, I thought, “I’m a man so that stuff burns off way faster than it does for her.” She has to eat well to keep up with the way my manly body operates : )

…Shortly after her utterance, my doctor looked at me in amazement, she shook her head and revealed that I had “really high cholesterol!” “Huh?, I said.” “Yeah, like, you need to go on medicine” At that point I laid down on the table and asked for water. You would do the same thing if thoughts of a heart attack and death started racing through your mind. Her prescription to me was “to cut out animal fats and eggs, and to start taking aspirin every other day”. I was to come back in two months and test again…if things didn’t get better, she’d be putting me on Crestor. And because I already was in good shape according to her well trained eye, I didn’t have much of a chance of getting my numbers lower the next time.

Over the next week, I received a myriad of advice from friends and family. Naturally, I leaned towards the CrossFit remedy for optimal health, which, contrary to the advice of my doctor, is to cut out starches and sugar. This idea didn’t go over too well with many of my close friends outside of our crazy, non-mainstream CrossFit community. “Randy,that steak you’re eating right there is pure cholesterol!” The best advice was when my mom called and told me I needed to start eating Cheerios and oatmeal everyday.

So for two months, I ate food with minimal starch and added sugar…I did not have even one cheat meal. I’m thankful to say that my experiment went as CrossFit predicted, my cholesterol levels dropped 46 points, and everything else in my blood work looked great. This change happened after living on only on meat, some dairy, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and some fruit for two months straight. My conclusion now is that I want to live as long as possible, and this way of life is enabling that goal. Going on meds is now unnecessary, and I will be able to sleep at night knowing that I don’t have to worry about what Crestor is doing to my liver. One of these days, the mainstream medical community will catch on…”

  1. Randy, your story shocked me. As I am still young at 53 (riiiiight), this lesson is doubly important to me. And it is the real reason I started crossfit – sure, I want my outside to be strong and fit (still working on that), but it is vitally important to me at my age to be sure my insides are taken care of. Exercise is only part of the answer, as you found out. I still struggle every day with poor food choices, but I can honestly say that overall, my nutrition is much better because of what I’m learning and experiencing at crossfit. I feel lucky and incredibly grateful to Crossfit Roseville for that! I am glad for you, and for all of us, that you’ve returned to good health and have found the way to maintain it for life! Thank you for sharing.
