Why did you join CrossFit Roseville?
I was at a point in my health “journey” that I needed an atmosphere that would make me push myself to be as athletic as I could be. I have always been obese, but never was okay with it. I always wanted to be an athlete. When I joined CrossFit Roseville I had been working out for a few years. In those few years I realized that obesity did not have to be who I was and that I had two important tools: a choice and potential. I was missing two other very important tools: direction and the accountability of a community. CrossFit Roseville offered me the opportunity on working on a goal I thought was impossible, to be an athlete.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
There have been so many over the last year it is honestly hard to choose. I think My biggest accomplishment in CrossFit may seems ridiculous to some, but it was running 2 miles for the first time in my life without stopping. Although running is hard physical for me, the biggest challenge was the mental battle. So yes, physically this was a huge accomplishment for me, but mentally it was a game changer because I was able to defeat the negative thoughts that got me to the unhealthy place I felt stuck in.

What are you working on now?
I would like to get my first rope climb by the end of this year and maintain consistency in my training schedule.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Roseville memory?
I did my first CrossFit competition last year (beginner of course). (This was a close runner up for my biggest accomplishment.) A fellow CrossFit “athlete” pushed me to sign up a week before. A few of the coaches and peers at CrossFit Roseville spent all the extra time they had during open Gym and even during class to help me feel confident in movements that would be in the competition. I knew before this that the support was there, but it really was made apparent during that week. The competition itself was really fun and pushed me to continue working on skills so I can hopefully compete in the future…in a non-beginner competition.

What motivates you to continue training at CrossFit Roseville?
Training consistently helps me balance my life in every way. If you are craving a positive change in your life this is the place to be. The growth you experience physically and mentally become essential in living a good life.

The coaches also make me continue to show up. I know CrossFit gets a bad reputation at times, but it is ultimately up to the coaches. CrossFit Roseville coaches maintain a balancing act of addressing individual needs, building confidence, and keeping your ego in check rather than you injuring yourself. This is a great gym for all people at all stages of their health journey.

The accountability factor is huge. I want to be clear that no one makes you feel guilty about missing a few classes, but that people get concerned when you disappear. The support and friendships you develop here are genuine. It is a lot easier showing up every day when everyone has a similar goal of health, in all aspects not just physical.

Why did you join CrossFit Roseville?
I joined Crossfit Roseville out of curiosity. I had heard a little about crossfit and was bored at Crunch and was interested in a class environment that was a challenge.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
So far I’ve done a bar muscle up (4 in a row) and 50 unbroken dubs (this morning). Bigger than that is I’ve yet to be bored in crossfit.

What are you working on now?
I am working on the barbell movements and lack of shoulder flexibility.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Roseville memory?
Favorite memory, probably the class after the 12 WODs of Christmas when Curtis brought up needing to work on OH squats. Not directed at me but knew who he was talking to. Jeff and I were in that sweat session class and motivated us both to start regular classes. Both pretty bad, but funny.

What motivates you to continue training at CrossFit Roseville?
Motivation is pretty easy now because I have so much to work on. It’s just on my daily schedule. If anything I’d like to come more but work. I also have been scheduling rest days as I think I need it to recover.

Why did you join CrossFit Roseville?
Well I was almost 200lbs and had never been that in my life. So with a little prodding from from a woman who is like a second mom to me, she was doing CrossFit in her 60’s. I figured if she could do it then so could I. So I joined. That was three years ago.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
I’d say my biggest accomplishment is just staying on track with eating better, getting stronger and constantly learning more! Doing my first RX Open this year was a big one for me personally.

What are you working on now?
Now, I’m trying to stay in condition for the Nor Cal Classic that four of us qualified for in June. That should be fun! And hot!!

What’s your favorite CrossFit Roseville memory?
My favorite memory has to be from this years Open. Watching Leslie push through the last workout and just pushing all the chips to the center of the table! He finished that workout when so many others didn’t(including myself) and just under the time cap. I did push him a bit, but it was ALL HIM! It was the best!!

What motivates you to continue training at CrossFit Roseville?
The people and my desire to stay healthy are my main motivation for continuing my fitness. I just feel better and it relieves stress from just about anything!! I have mad some amazing friends! So that should about sum it up!

Why did you join CrossFit Roseville?
My husband was trying out Crossfit Roseville and thought I’d love it as I was having a hard time with a preschooler at the “normal gym” and getting in my workout routine. I wasn’t motivated at all. Crossfit challenged me and kept me accountable. I fell in love!

What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
I think my accomplishments change as my perspective changes. I remember when I started I could barely do a pull-up on the THICKEST band. I remember my first kipping pull-up being a game changer for me – I was so proud of myself! The next big one was chest to bar pull-ups and getting to do them in the Crossfit Open. And then Hand-stand push ups. There is always a new goal to chase – and reaching them is exciting!

What are you working on now?
I would love to get a bar muscle up (and maybe a strict pull up one day!)

What’s your favorite CrossFit Roseville memory?
I loved doing the Women’s Gauntlet and Fittest of Roseville with my teammates from the gym. So fun to cheer each other on and push each other!

What motivates you to continue training at CrossFit Roseville?
I love the people/community that I have here. These are MY people! I love that the workouts are varied and the coaches know how to help each individual with where they are. I love the coaches. I love that I have become a strong woman and a role model to my kids in fitness because of Crossfit Roseville.

I feel like it is time to share my story of the last year in hopes of inspiring someone who may be considering Crossfit.

I heard about Crossfit from a friend. I tagged along with her one Saturday morning last December. I remember that first warm up. By the time we finished I was thinking, “that is just the warm up? what is this workout going to be like?”… The workout kicked my butt!

It took me a few months to be fully committed to changing my workout regime and eating habits. What I had been doing at a standard gym obviously wasn’t working. I needed to change. I was battling the bulge and the bulge was winning!

My wake up call was the day I was shopping for new jeans and I had to buy a size 16! I had been denying that fact that I was getting fatter – I had been telling myself the stores are making clothes smaller now a days…it’s not me. It’s the clothes. I stepped on a scale for the first time in probably 6 months and almost cried when I saw the numbers pop up. How did I get to almost 190lbs? I’m only 5’4!

I came back to Crossfit at the end of February. I started Weight Watchers and was ready jump in to my new diet plan and step up my workout.

My first workout as a member was great! People had recognized me from my test run back in December. In true Crossfit Roseville fashion, Justin had everyone introduce themselves to me. Then it was time to work out. I was feeling a little discouraged when I saw the work out on the board. There were several stations that were set up including wall ball, dead lifts, running and pulls up. I couldn’t run – I had an old injury on my knee and plus the extra weight it was hard for me to run more then 400 meter at a time. I couldn’t do a pull up, even with the thickest blue band….The coaches and other Crossfit peeps were all encouraging. At the end of the workout I felt inspired (even with all the adjustment we had to make to the workout).

I stuck with it! I wanted to lose 20 lbs. That was my goal. I lost about 12 pounds in the first 6 weeks – slow and steady. Clothes were starting to fit better and I was starting to believe in myself again. I was also making progress on pull ups and could comfortably jog long distance now without my knee bothering me!

By May I had lost 35 lbs and felt fantastic. Every month I continue to make progress and beat my personal records. All in all I have lost 43 lbs since I started Crossfit in February! I went from a size 16 to a size 5! More then the weight I feel better, I have more energy, my knee rarely ever bothers me! I will never go back to a standard gym again!

My advice to anyone that is considering trying Crossfit commit to 60 days…you will be hooked!

Thank you to everyone who has ever pushed or encouraged me during a workout. I’m looking forward to making more progress in 2012.

Alison

After Jet was born I remember coming into the gym, feeling so insecure because I was so far behind everyone else. I would find any excuse to skip a work out. Being a beginner again was a really hard pill to swallow, especially coming from owning a box myself.

When I finally put my pride aside and focused on the bigger picture, and reminded myself what I used to tell all my clients, “Trust the process”, beautiful things started happening. I began to worry about myself and MY gains and MY goals rather than what everyone else was doing.

I would NOT have been able to do this without CrossFit Roseville and my AMAZING coaches! Jesse Phillips, Stacey Smith Gilmore, Talitha Stivers. You have all inspired me and believed in me in ways I cant thank you enough for. I’m gaining my confidence more and more each day, and I am feeling myself getting better, stronger and faster.

When I participated in the Super Hero Nutrition Game it was really difficult giving up alcohol and saying no when colleagues would bring in food since I am definitely a social eater so learning to say no without worrying about being rude was a big hurdle for me.

By changing my nutrition and being purposefully active every day I find that I am more alert and focused which I really didn’t expect, but the biggest difference I think comes from not drinking in the evenings, my sleep is of better quality giving me more energy during the day. I am really enjoying the challenge this game has presented me with and I really hope I carry it through past the end.

This is usually a time of the year that I overindulge and regret it, usually I will undo all the work I had put in to get fit and be healthy. Thanks Jesse Phillips and CFRV for helping me be healthy this season!

Thank you so much for having me! I am so grateful to the CFRV community – it is the people and sense of empowerment that is so motivating and keeps me pushing to get stronger and fitter.

I went into CrossFit thinking I was not the typical athlete, and very quickly realized that it was not something about which to feel ashamed. We motivate, encourage and inspire one another in our shared experience, and the resulting successes are priceless.

Huge kudos to the coaches for always coaching with a philosophy of movement and with such compassion, and to all the amazing athletes striving and thriving together toward greatness! You’ve motivated, encouraged and inspired me, so thank you!

My goal is to just keep moving forward all around.

I’m so inspired by every single person in our CrossFit Roseville family. Talitha Stivers, Kenny Stivers, and Jesse Phillips have created so much great, positive energy in our CF home.

Feb I will hit my three year CF anniversary. It’s hard to even put into words what being a part of CrossFit Roseville has done for me.

Physically, mentally and emotionally I’m becoming the best me.

When I walked into the gym I could barely do a push up, I was scared of even holding a training bar, pull ups were a fantasy and my self image was well not always a positive one. So hung up on numbers on a scale or pant size but now my goals are deeper. I want try new things, explore new places, meet different people, challenge myself to be better and stronger than yesterday.

I want and pray that as I do this my kids see how great their quality of life can be if they always wake up with the same passion. It took me 35 yrs to find myself and I just want to keep exploring.

Our gym and family means so much to me. It’s more than just a place to sweat. It’s a place where I find myself, where I can turn off my mind and open my heart. It’s a place where friends pick up more than a bar they pick up each other.
