Goal Setting

Now that the CrossFit Open is over and Summer is on it’s way it is a great time to re-evaluate your goals for this next training year. What made you feel really successful during these past three months? What is something you want to improve on or get better at now?

At CrossFit Roseville we are here to help you achieve those goals. Whether it is to improve body composition, get stronger, prepare for fitness outside the box, etc. Now is the time to think about what you want to achieve and where you want to go with your training.

Goal Setting: What Do You Want For Yourself?

Step 1.
Craft a vision of where you want to go.

Say to yourself: “I will feel really successful if I accomplish…” And fill in the blank. Next ask yourself why is accomplishing this goal important to you? How will it benefit your life? How will it make you a better person, what positive character traits and relationships will striving to accomplish goal help you to develop?

Think of this practice as creating a destination post-card. Imagine you are at your best self one year from today. What do you look like? How do you feel? What have you accomplished? Who are you hanging out with? Where are you getting your knowledge and inspiration from? Etc.

Take 5 minutes to write down in as much detail as possible what this future outcome looks like. Got it?—Great, now we can use this destination post-card to create the action plan, the mini-steps we need to take along the way.

Step 2.
Determine your commitment level.

Working towards a new goal requires changing our behavior. This takes time/effort/energy away from what we are currently doing so that we can put these resources towards getting us to where we want to go.

Deciding your commitment level will determine how much of these resources are you willing to commit to this new destination.

Step 3.
What are the biggest steps you need to accomplish to move one step at a time towards your goal?

These are your milestones you need to reach to climb higher and higher towards your final destination. What are the biggest road blocks that might delay or try to deter you from reaching each of these milestones? How can you overcome each of these potential barriers?

Step 4.
Take constant action.

Every day. What small, repeatable steps are you taking each day? Taking constant action builds momentum.

At first working towards a goal can seem like we are pushing a large rock that’s barely moving (it feels like we are pushing the rock uphill, gaining any movement is a struggle).

But the more we are feeding momentum, every day, the faster we gain velocity until the rock is cruising along (it feels like we are pushing our rock downhill, now all we have to do is steer it in the right direction).

Step 5.
What can you do today?—Right now even, to work towards accomplishing this goal?

If we are not working towards accomplishing our goals today, we don’t have goals we have wishes. Wishing that we were different doesn’t make it so. All too often waiting until (fill in the blank) becomes never.

Act today, even if it is the smallest thing you can do, and build on that tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, until it becomes a reality. Quickly write down what is one thing you can do today to work towards your goal.

Step 6.
Keeping failing until you succeed.

How many times are you willing to fail before you either succeed or give up? Let’s think about this a different way: How many times does a baby or infant fail to walk before they can walk?

Can you imagine if after ten or even twenty attempts at walking parents gave up and just said, “well you know my kid tried but we’re calling it at 20 days in… walking just must not be my kids thing.” Of course not!—because if every parent gave up after twenty or even fifty days of trying to walk no one would ever learn to walk.

We must put it in our minds from day one that we will fail until we succeed.

Step 7.
Celebrate the Simple Wins

We don’t go from can’t walk to sprint in a day. We take “Baby Steps!” And we as parents and family members are so excited for each little baby step because we see that progress and we get excited, don’t we? We see that growth,—that today our beloved can do something that yesterday they couldn’t.

These simple wins keep us excited to learn each day, they keep us inspired and eager to grow into our greatest potential.

Once you have an idea of a destination you would like to get to write that down. We’ll help ensure that you get there. We have a great group of coaches with a breadth of knowledge and skills to help you. It might be focusing more on your nutrition than on the wods, or evaluating the frequency of your training, or even scheduling a 1:1 session to help breakdown and practice certain movements.
